Questão 43. In reference to the ideas presented in the text, decide whether the statements below are right (C) or wrong (E).

1. The text reveals two elements of child marriage which work together to disempower women: gender and age difference.

CERTO. No texto, child marriage é algo que ocorre não com crianças de ambos os sexos, mas sim com girls, o que, portanto, é um indicativo de que child marriage tenha estrita relação com gender. Além disso, o texto afirma que “they [girls] are often married to older men – a situation that leaves them less able to ensure that they are treated well” (l. 36-38), o que mostra como age difference, nesse caso, disempowers women.

2. One can correctly deduce from the text that Memory’s sister became pregnant with the complicity of those involved in her cleansing ceremony.

CERTO. A impressão que se tem é que sim, já que trata-se de uma cerimônia sexual tradicional que tem como objetivo, supostamente, preparar meninas na puberdade para a idade adulta e o casamento.

3. Programs and campaigns to end child marriage should focus on girls who are already attending secondary school.

ERRADO. O texto informa que meninas que têm secondary education têm uma probabilidade muito menor de se casarem muito jovens do que meninas com menor nível de educação, o que indica que é preciso que as campanhas tenham como enfoque as meninas que ainda não chegaram à secondary school, pois assim a educação pode contribuir para a diminuição e o fim do casamento infantil.

4. The authors regard Memory Banda’s efforts as successful because she was able to get ger young sister divorced from her older husband.

ERRADO. O texto não afirma que a irmã de Memory é divorciada. Os esforços de Memory são considerados bem-sucedidos porque o governo de Malawi aprovou uma lei que define um novo limite mínimo de idade para o casamento: 18 anos.

Questão 44. In reference to the linguistic features of the text, decide whether the following statements are right (C) or wrong (E).

1. In the sentence “Since then (…) should follow” (l. 4 to 7), the reference to Memory’s sister is based on the fragment “this remarkable young woman” and the two occurrences of “her”.

ERRADO. This remarkable young woman e as duas ocorrências de her fazem referência a Memory Banda, e não à sua irmã.

2. By using the expression “blazing a trail” (l. 6), the authors inform the reader that Memory has opened a glowing and intense path as a result of her work.

ERRADO. Blaze a trail é uma set phrase que quer dizer “abrir caminho; ser pioneiro; ser percursor”. Glowing e intense não parecem modificar o substantivo path de uma forma que a paráfrase seja fiel.

Adendo: Consta do gabarito preliminar que o item está CERTO.

3. The adjective “grassroots” (l. 17) indicates that Memory became involved with an elite group from rural areas of Malawi.

ERRADO. Grassroots faz referência às pessoas simples, ao poviléu.

4. The meaning and the grammar correction of the extract “Every year (…) often ignored” (l. 25 to 27) are maintained if this sentence is replaced by: Annually circa 15 million girls marry before turning 18, but their predicament is ignored by all more often than not.

ERRADO. O problema aqui é “ignored by all more often than not”. Primeiramente porque o texto não diz que a situação delas é ignorada por todos (note que, no texto, não há agente da passiva). Em segundo lugar, all too often e more often than not não têm exatamente o mesmo sentido.
