O quarto e último texto da prova de inglês do TPS 2012 veio acompanhado de três questões, assim como os outros textos, as quais estavam relacionadas a compreensão de leitura e vocabulário. Passemos aos comentários.

Questão 1

Based on the text, judge if the following items are right (C) or wrong (E).

1. In the second paragraph, the author suggests that the information collected under duress is not reliable.

Estou de acordo com o gabarito preliminar: a alternativa está CERTA. Na realidade, o texto, na passagem “the sincerity of which is, in any case, questionable, since it was elicited from him when he was under interrogation for the capital crime of libel”, não fala abertamente que houve “duress” (=coação, ameaças), mas a palavra chave da assertiva é “suggest”.

2. The text is built on images associated with darkness, which suggests that Caravaggio’s life, as well as the quality of his art, was shadowy and shady.

Também estou de acordo com o gabarito preliminar: alternativa ERRADA. O texto está, na realidade, construído com imagens de luz e sombra – como a arte do próprio Michelangelo da Caravaggio fazia uso do “chiaroscuro“. As imagens de sombra de fato sugerem que a vida do artista foi “shadowy” (=sombria, obscura) e “shady” (=duvidosa, suspeita), mas não que sua arte tenha sido “shady”.

3. The author provides the opening paragraph with a cinematic quality for he attempts to create dynamic scenes.

Depois de muita hesitação, acredito que a alternativa está CERTA – apesar de mal-formulada, pois muito aberta à interpretação. No primeiro parágrafo, podemos identificar algumas cenas dinâmicas: “A man is decapitated in his bedchamber, blood spurting from a deep gash in his neck. A woman is shot in the stomach with a bow and arrow at point-blank range”. Por causa disso, poderia-se afirmar que o primeiro parágrafo ganha uma qualidade cinematográfica, se pensarmos etmologicamente o que é “cinematic” ou “cinema” (do francês, “cinéma”, redução do termo “cinématographe” cunhado pelos irmãos Lumière no século XIX, que por sua vez vem do grego antigo “kinema”, que quer dizer “movimento”).

4. From the passage “He is a man who can never be known in full because almost all that he did, said and though is lost in the irrecoverable past.” (lines 14-16) it can be correctly inferred that the author is of the opinion that the study of history is a futile attempt to reconstruct events from the past.

Estou de acordo com o gabarito preliminar: a alternativa está ERRADA. O fato de autor dizer que Michelangelo da Caravaggio nunca poderá ser conhecido de forma completa porque tudo o que fez, disse e pensou está perdido em um passado irrecuperável não quer necessariamente dizer que o autor acha que o estudo da história é uma tentativa infrutífera de reconstruir eventos do passado.

Questão 39

In line 5, “at point-blank range” means

A. in a cold-blooded manner

B. summarily.

C. without intention.

D. fatally.

E. within a short distance.

A resposta correta é a E. “Point-blank” é o que em português chamamos de “à queima roupa”.

Questão 40

In the last paragraph of the text, the cause for Caravaggio’s disagreement with the waiter was

A. the sauce served with the artichokes.

B. the inartistic appearance of the food.

C. the unaffordable price of the plate.

D. the frugality of the dish.

E. the lack of freshness of the artichokes.

Estou de acordo com o gabarito preliminar: a resposta correta é a A. O texto dizia: “He has a fight with a waiter about the dressing on a plate of artichokes”. A palavra “dressing“, nesse caso, quer dizer “molho, tempero”, assim como “sauce“.
